Weather tracker: Typhoon Saudel causes mass evacuations in south-east China

A big storm, Typhoon Saudel, brings a lot of rain to south-east China. This rain is very strong, we call it torrential rain. It causes many problems in places like Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, and Guangdong. One city, Putian, gets more than 400mm of rain in one day. Some villages get even more, over 500mm.

Because of the bad weather, many people must leave their homes. This is called to evacuate. In Fujian, almost 600,000 people go to safe places. In Jiangxi, 9,000 people also evacuate. The rain causes a lot of damage. Roads and buildings get broken. Some areas have floods, and the ground can slide down, which is a landslip.

In one city, Wenzhou, more than 2,500 students and teachers are stuck in a school because of floods. In Putian, a wall holding back water breaks, and 100 homes are destroyed. About 1,260 people need help there. Sadly, a landslip in Jiangxi kills three people, and nine more are missing. While China has rain, South Africa has thunderstorms, and parts of the US are very hot.
