NASA announces astronauts for Artemis III spaceflight, scheduled for 2027

NASA has announced the crew for the Artemis III spaceflight, a key mission aiming to support future Moon landings. This mission is planned for 2027 and will feature four astronauts: Andre Douglas, Frank Rubio, Luca Parmitano, and Randy Bresnik. Bob Heintz will serve as a backup astronaut, ready to step into any role if needed.

The crew's primary objective during their two-week mission is to gather research and practice in-space docking procedures. These activities are crucial preparations for the complex maneuvers required for a successful Moon landing. The selected astronauts bring diverse backgrounds and experiences. Andre Douglas, an engineer, will be making his first spaceflight as a mission specialist. Frank Rubio, a physician and former Black Hawk helicopter pilot, also serves as a mission specialist and holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a U.S. astronaut. Randy Bresnik, the mission commander and a former Navy test pilot, is the only crew member with experience from a space shuttle mission and commanded the International Space Station in 2017. Luca Parmitano, from Italy, will be the pilot and previously commanded the International Space Station, becoming the first Italian to do so.

Jared Isaacman, NASA administrator, praised the crew, noting their "unique background" and "vast experience." The Artemis III mission also involves a public-private partnership. Three rockets will launch: one carrying the crew in an Orion spacecraft, and two others transporting Moon lander models from private companies Blue Origin and SpaceX. The Orion spacecraft will then practice rendezvous procedures with these landers. Despite a recent Blue Origin rocket explosion, NASA and Blue Origin officials expressed confidence. Jeremy Parsons, NASA's acting deputy administrator, stated that setbacks are learning opportunities and that Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket would be ready for Artemis III, with significant collaboration and access to NASA's expertise. John Couluris of Blue Origin called the incident an "anomaly" and affirmed their ongoing effort.
