UK government ‘concerned’ by abuse claims against West Ham co-owner

The British government has expressed deep concern regarding allegations of predatory behaviour against David Sullivan, a billionaire co-owner of West Ham football club. These serious claims involve Sullivan allegedly preying on women for sex, with accounts from seven women emerging in the British media this week. The alleged incidents date back to the 1980s and 1990s when Sullivan owned tabloid newspapers like the Daily Sport. The women claim he pressured young or aspiring models in their late teens or early twenties.

In response to these accusations, Mr. Sullivan, aged 77, recently resigned from his role as joint chair of the London football club. He stated he needed to fight what he called "false allegations" about his private life, which he believes have been "sensationalised by the media." Despite stepping down as chair, he remains West Ham’s largest shareholder. A spokesman for the UK's Department for Culture, Media and Sport emphasized the importance of treating these deeply concerning allegations with "utmost seriousness" and called for them to be investigated by relevant authorities, ensuring victims receive necessary support.

London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed they are investigating a report related to the "alleged taking of indecent images and sexual exploitation" from the 1980s. This investigation focuses on one alleged victim and is being led by specialist detectives. Furthermore, the BBC is looking into claims involving Tony Livesey, a former editor for Sullivan's newspapers and now a BBC presenter. Livesey is accused of helping facilitate a meeting between Sullivan and an accuser; he has temporarily stepped back from his radio show. The Independent Football Regulator (IFR) is also in contact with West Ham, seeking information from Sullivan regarding his suitability for club ownership, a process that examines the fitness of owners, directors, and senior executives.
