Almost half of world’s farmers poisoned by pesticides every year, experts find

A groundbreaking study has unveiled a stark reality: nearly half of the global farming population suffers from pesticide poisoning annually. This comprehensive research, which meticulously analyzed publicly available data spanning from 2006 to 2023, paints a grim picture of occupational hazards in the agricultural sector. The findings suggest an alarming prevalence of exposure to hazardous chemicals among those primarily responsible for cultivating the world's food supply, underscoring a significant public health crisis.

The study, which was commissioned by the Pesticide Action Network, estimates a staggering 402 to 433 million cases of unintentional acute pesticide poisoning affecting farmers and farm workers each year. This immense figure underscores the systemic risks inherent in current agricultural practices, where a substantial portion of the workforce is regularly exposed to toxic compounds. Such widespread incidents highlight critical deficiencies in safety protocols, access to protective equipment, and adequate training on chemical handling across various regions, often exacerbated by socioeconomic factors and pressure to maximize yields.

Beyond non-fatal incidents, the report also sheds light on the tragic human cost, indicating that approximately 11,000 people succumb to pesticide poisoning every year. A particularly concerning statistic reveals that India alone accounts for nearly 60% of these annual acute fatalities. This disproportionate impact points towards specific regional challenges, potentially including regulatory gaps, intensive agricultural methods, widespread use of highly hazardous pesticides, or limited farmer education on pesticide risks and safe application. The study serves as an urgent call for concerted international efforts to mitigate these preventable health crises and implement more sustainable and safer farming practices worldwide, safeguarding the well-being and livelihoods of the global agricultural workforce.
