São Tomé and Príncipe heads to polls in tense presidential election

The small African nation of São Tomé and Príncipe recently held a presidential election on Sunday. This crucial event saw citizens casting their ballots to choose the country's leader, with the aim of reinforcing its democratic standing.

The current incumbent, Carlos Vila Nova, sought to secure a second term in office. He ran as an independent candidate, which means he was not affiliated with a specific political party during this campaign. His objective was to overcome his former political party in the electoral contest.

According to the National Election Commission, approximately 142,000 people were registered to vote. A significant portion of these registered voters, about 15%, live in the diaspora, meaning they reside outside the country. This election was seen as an important opportunity for São Tomé and Príncipe, one of Africa's least populous nations, to demonstrate its commitment to democratic processes.
