Opinion: Algae doesn't care about our party lines

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, an iconic landmark in Washington D.C., recently underwent a significant beautification project. Initiated by President Trump, this effort aimed to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the famous water body, which is a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike. The renovation involved a substantial investment, with approximately $14 million allocated to improve the pool's appearance. As part of the upgrades, a special coating, often described as 'American flag blue,' was applied to the bottom of the pool, intended to give the water a vibrant and patriotic hue.

However, despite this considerable financial outlay and the application of new materials, the reflecting pool is currently facing an unexpected challenge: a severe algae bloom. Algae, a type of simple plant, grows rapidly in water, often turning it green or murky. This robust growth has overshadowed the intended blue color and is making the pool appear dirty. The presence of such a significant algae bloom indicates that the measures taken during the renovation were not fully effective in preventing this natural phenomenon.

The issue highlights the ongoing struggle to maintain large outdoor water features, especially when they are exposed to natural elements. Even with modern technology and significant funding, environmental factors can still pose difficult problems. The current state of the pool's surface suggests that ongoing maintenance and potentially new solutions are required to control the algae and ensure the pool remains a pristine and beautiful monument for visitors.
